Two general service brass buttons to side of cap holding the thin brown leather and brass mounted chinstrap. Machine Gun Corps brass badge to the front.

Very Scarce RAD Transitional M17 (Austrian) Steel helmet.
Normally I steer away from german helmets with decals but this particular helmet has come from a none collector and was brought home at the end of the war by his father as a souvenir together with an RAD Hewer of which I have just sold prior to christmas.
The helmet is an M17 Austrian helmet with the typical rivetted side D fastenings for the chin strap, but this helmet also has two further welded fatenings on the edge of the helmet (Possibly for use by Cavalry I am told) also for chinstrap fastening, then it gets even more bizarre as it has the Third Reich transitional alloy and leather standard lining as a replacement for the old lining and this also has two chinstrap fastenings, this being affixed to the helmet by the standard rivets but also with the use of three fibre spacers between lining and shell.
The colour of the helmet is also unusual in that it is a light grey green colour of which I have never encountered before in all my years of handling these items , this linked with the rather large and I would assume rare RAD decal applied to oneside in silver/gilt large eagle clutching the RAD emblem on a large black shield background.
There is 'Steg 66' painted in white to the inside edge and painted under the lining is the words 'Geogs 5./7.RAzD.
All this, making this what I would class as a very desirable and very scarce helmet for the helmet collectors.
